A seminal figure in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the seventies and eighties, Kim MacConnel’s oeuvre has surpassed being categorized. His sensibility and talent has created a unique language using color and composition. In this exhibition, MacConnel presents eighteen acrylic paintings on canvas that are quirky, loose, and contain almost inebriated mixed patterns. He persuades the viewer to appreciate the appeal and conceptual property of patterns. As a point of departure, MacConnel uses Picasso’s Girl Before a Mirror, where a silhouette of a face and hints of a torso become a part of the pattern. MacConnel is questioning the importance of traditional subject matter by using color and patterns exclusively.
