Press Release

Rosamund Felsen Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition featuring the work of Los Angeles-based Tim Ebner, with an installation in our West Gallery by Steven Hull. This will be Ebner’s 15th exhibition at our gallery, and Steven Hull’s 8th exhibition with us.

Tim Ebner has long been a practitioner of the unpredictable and the experimental in painting. His projects have varied a great deal over the several decades he’s been exhibiting. Ebner’s last exhibition featured scroll-cut plywood fish overlaid with abstract paintings on canvas cut to fit the shape of the fish. He then added various materials – such as sculpey and feathers – and mounted the work to metal brackets so that the pieces were extended away from the wall. It was a keen look at painterly space that exists outside the structure of the rectangle-on-the-wall. Here Ebner elaborates on the aquatic and underwater motif, but the emphases have shifted. This new body of work leads us away from questions of painting and its delineations and instead points us towards various manners of illusion and depiction. The gallery will again be turned into a sea of swimming fish and rays, but the works are now free standing and circumnavigable, allowing for the sensation of movement and dynamism between observer and work. Some works are raw, salvaged steel, others are upholstered in a range of fabrics; some pieces are flat, others have dimension. Instead of investigating a relationship to painting (or any other specific art medium), Ebner’s work looks at the ways that illusion and immersion are serviced by the permutations of craft and labor.

Steven Hull will be converting our West Gallery space into a sculptural maritime battlefield in which mythical, gun wielding, cigarette-smoking characters (both male and female), all constructed of wood and mixed media, play out an illusory oceanic battle scene. Supporting the figures are 3 brightly hued, toy-like ship forms that are positioned before a 12 x 24 foot abstract painting and surrounded by a sea of black wooden waves. This latest installation by Hull draws upon carnival shooting galleries, plastic action figures, oversized folk art, and the colors of West Hollywood.

Tim Ebner lives and works in Los Angeles and holds a BFA and an MFA from CalArts. He has exhibited domestically and internationally since the early 1980’s. Steven Hull is a Los Angeles- and Oakland-based artist. He holds a BFA and an MFA from CalArts.
